"The World's Biggest Army"? Yes. But does it have the will to resist?

THE WORLD'S BIGGEST ARMY

As long as 3% resist ... who knows from which of those muzzles the liberty blows will be struck?

In order to be effective, a deterrent must be either credible or proven. Having a rifle is not enough. Having the will to use that rifle is not enough. One must also be known by a potential target to be able to reliably make hits at tactical distance to be considered an effective deterrent by that potential target.

There are two things that the Appleseed program has demonstrated time and time again at ranges all over this country each and every weekend of each and every year:

1. American shooters do not hit as well as they think they do. The "dinner plate at 40 yards" example quoted is true. Few American rifle owners can reliably hold a 6 inch bull at 100 meters.

2. Appleseed can provide that American rifle owner with the tools he or she needs to correct their shooting mistakes and eventually become a "rifleman". One who is capable of making consistent hits on man-sized targets at 500 meters.

Do you seriously think that Appleseed has been operating for years without FedGov taking the opportunity to evaluate the average American rifle owner's effectiveness? Could a belief on their part that the average AR15 owner can't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside have any part of their seeming belief that they can ignore us?

Maybe they've learned two of the important lessons from Appleseed. Targets never lie and Hits matter.

Maybe it's time for you to go to an Appleseed?

We are an innovative and industrious bunch.

If Pakistani tribesmen can build new weapons out of junk, and they do so every day, just imagine what is possible in America.

I wouldn't want to be on the other end of that. A fact that is not lost on our oppressors. They will miscalculate and then there will be horror.

It's only a matter of time now.

They are totally convinced that they are going to win because they can lie and get away with it.

When this kicks off they don't realize that everything and everyone government connected, will be consider enemy. Everything media will likewise be considered enemy.

It will be enormously funny to observe their reactions when they begin to realize that their lies aren't working anymore.

I do not care to hear the number of the sheep. It is the number of lions that matters. Tread softly would be tyrants, there are lions in the woods.

Yes, the numbers of lions are who counts.
I made my mind up long ago on that score and have prepared accordingly.
Count me as one.

The author of the linked piece neglected to consider another dynamic in his essay, another shooting demographic which is rather skillful with arms. Poachers.
I've live better than 50 years in purely rural mountainous wooded terrain, in these remote parts poaching is a way of life. Another aspect to consider is as a poacher you are not only hunting elusive game on its home turf, but avoiding being detected by other humans, and you also have to develop a secure and clandestine system of rendering your game to possession. You know, in the freezer. And do it quickly, quietly, usually by a single shot,or snare and such, in the dark, under adverse conditions.
Poachers may be looked upon as villains by many, but the are crafty and highly skilled. Some compliment their entire yearly meat supply through poaching. Some of the more accomplished poachers share their bounty with others. And all this supporting a family, job home and whatnot, and are never suspected as poachers.
Not a minor feet all things considered.

Keep in mind that they recruit from the same population. How many rounds are fired per kill in war by US military?

I am one of that theoretical army.

Shooting since age 8. Instructing since age 16.

I do not believe your 70% hit ratio is credible. Shooting people has very little in common with shooting deer.

Check the statistics in On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society by Dave Grossman.

Historical evidence shows somewheres upward of 75% of average riflemen will not deliberately kill another human being, even to save their own life.

Crew served weapons are different...

As much as I find the article's premise appealing, it's also nothing more than fantasy.

Ever seen a modern infantry unit in operation? Forgetting game-enders like indirect fire and close air support, the firepower available and employed is nothing short of awe-inspiring. In fact, it's downright frightening - and to the average Fudd with his lever gun, it'd be horrifying.

IF, through some miracle, the US military sat out a 2nd American Revolution, this fantasy might have something going for it, but short of that . . . sorry. And please believe me: I get no pleasure from saying this. This nation is off the rails and in serious need of readjustment. I just don't see deer hunters being the insurmountable force this author does.

As someone commented on the page with the original essay, no foreign military force is going to invade us. It is NOT going to happen in our lifetimes. This is the case for a variety of reasons, foremost among them our nuclear deterrent.

The one and only threat of tyranny to Americans living within US borders comes from our own government at all levels: federal, state, and local. Government in America is already imposing tyranny and openly flouting its own constitution (civil asset forfeiture without due process, warrantless surveillance, de facto police immunity from prosecution for excessive force, etc.).

Is it as bad as it can be? No, but it's getting progressively worse.

Former11BRAVO,

Many have made the claim that the US military is more or less invincible, but that claim has been thoroughly refuted in one guerrilla conflict after another.

Most recently, combined US-NATO forces in Afghanistan had plenty of firepower, but it wasn't sufficient to defeat the Taliban in over a decade of conflict. This is in spite of the fact that the Taliban have always been far weaker than the armed American civilian population in just about every way: number of personnel, quality of weapons and ammo, and -- perhaps most important -- the ability to go on the offense as opposed to perpetually defending against an invasion of their own soil.

The Taliban (or the Iraqis, or the VC, etc.) didn't live in the very same neighborhoods as the people they were fighting with. They didn't shop in the same grocery stores, use electric power from the same utility companies, eat food provided by the same farmers, etc.

It took hundreds of men seven weeks to catch Eric Frein. The bill was in the millions of dollars. How will that scale to 10,000 people? 100,000? A million?

On the other hand, it is still very much an open question whether there is a limit to the tyranny that can be imposed on Americans without causing an armed uprising. The number of people who would participate in such an uprising is also a big question mark. Most Americans think they're going to live forever as long as they obey politicians and grovel before their enforcers.
